prof.dr.sibeldemirelThree years ago, Ankara University Retina Team started on this study through a TÜBİTAK 1001-funded project. Today, our work has found its place in Retina journal, one of the most prestigious journals in the field of retinal diseases.
Our goal was simple: to better understand the role of inflammation in treatment-naïve diabetic macular edema.
Using Irvine–Gass syndrome as an inflammatory control, we explored the relationship between aqueous cytokines, flare measurements, and OCT biomarkers.
What we found was perhaps more intriguing than expected.
Inflammation was present, but not uniformly. Aqueous flare did not reliably reflect inflammatory activity in DME, while OCT features such as hyperreflective foci and ellipsoid zone disruption appeared to provide more meaningful clues.
Perhaps inflammation in DME is not an all-or-none phenomenon. Its contribution changes across patients, phenotypes, and disease stages. We confirmed all those with correlations of cytokines in aqueous humour.
